In the Workrooms with Elmslie Embroiderers and Artists

Exhibition 5th and 6th October 10.00-5.00

NB - this exhibition is not in the main hall - but rather in the workrooms on the lower ground floor - please look for signage to help direct you to the correct door

Previously Head of Art and Crafts at Malvern Hills College Caroline Park formed The Elmslie Embroiderers following the College closure in 2020. Julia Beard had already established her Elmslie artists painting classes, and the intention has always been to bring as much of the ethos and  experience of the Malvern Art School to Elmslie House as possible. Frida Mooreshas joined us to teach watercolour, and we are delighted that the silversmithing equipment from the college is currently being installed in the Elmslie Conference Room, where jewellery classes will also soon be available.

Caroline and Julia’s students have held many exhibitions together in the main Elmslie Gallery. This one differs from the previous ones because we are offering the opportunity to meet the makers in the rooms where we create the work, see demonstrations and work in progress, and chat to group members.

Both groups are mentored and students work towards individual themes. The textiles group also have a group theme which is currently Connections. This means that as well as  exploring what Connections means to us individually, we have undertaken a variety of different collaborative approaches. For example artist Sarah Dixon has collaborated with textile artist Sarah Lane painting a portrait of hermaking her felt flowers in the studio. Several of us are collaborating with weaver William Hyett who breeds silk moths and is guardian to natural meadows to create pieces using materials from his land; and Lesley Brankin has collaborated with different makers to create soulmate pieces as part of her red thread project.

We hope you enjoy looking at our individual approaches and the collaborative works, finished pieces and works in progress. Please ask our stewards if you would like more information, or to purchase any of the work on show. As well as selling finished works many of our members are also available to work to commission.

All of the work in progress will be completed for our next exhibiton  in the main Elmslie House Gallery March 5th and 6th 2025 so please visit us again then too.

Elmslie artists and Elmslie Embroiderers have been meeting on Wednesday mornings and afternoons on the lower ground floor here at Elmslie for the past 4 years and this unusual exhibition is ideal for both those wishing to purchase work, or for those considering joining one of the groups.

The exhibition is taking place in the down stairs work rooms so that visitors can see the workspaces, watch demonstrations and meet the makers.

These popular classes include homemade cakes and coffee or tea….so for a real taster of the Elmslie experience homemade cakes will be available for purchase in the kitchen during the exhibition!
