ALVOR TRIO
Sarah Newbold (flute), Martin Outram (viola), Imogen Barford (harp)
The concert opens with a selection of favourite moments from Mozart’s opera ‘The Magic Flute’, melded together into a 12-minute ‘diversion’ by Derek Smith, and includes a trio arrangement, also by Derek Smith, of Mozart’s earliest string quartet.
Central to the programme are two atmospheric trios of beguiling timbre, one by Debussy, one by Bax, written only a year apart (1915 and 1916), and Debussy’s famous Syrinx for solo flute. Vaughan Williams is represented by a much loved work, which reflects his lifelong fascination for English folk music, and the Welsh composer William Mathias by a trio comprising three character pieces associated with signs of the Zodiac.
Mozart (arr. Derek Smith) ‘Magic Flute Divertimento’
Bax Elegiac Trio
Mathias Zodiac Trio
Debussy Syrinx (solo flute)
Mozart (arr. Derek Smith) Trio arrangement of String Quartet in G K80
Vaughan Williams Six Studies in English Folk Song (viola and harp)
Debussy Sonata for flute, viola and harp
The musicians have highly successful individual professional careers and blend perfectly as they come together as the Alvor Trio to perform these wonderful works.
