It seems strange to think that only a few weeks ago Elmslie House was playing host to the Blue Magpie Contemporary Craft Market, and we were free to wander amongst the stalls, chat to makers, drink tea and eat Anna’s delicious homemade cake. Now we find ourselves at home, turning to online communities for ideas to keep us and our children entertained, going for walks and bike rides locally, drinking tea in isolation and only dreaming of Anna’s homemade cake.

When all this is over, will we have learnt to appreciate the small things? Will we relish handmade over mass produced? Will we be closer to our friends and families in a way that only this sort of once in a lifetime crisis gives us the chance to be?

It’s tough not being able to see family and friends; relying on the likes of FaceTime and Zoom to catch up with them. We find ourselves shopping only when we need to, writing careful lists of the groceries we’re running low of (sometimes with a few treats thrown in for good measure). For those of us with children we juggle home and work life as best we can. We make sure parents, grandparents and others who are vulnerable are ok and have what they need. We’re pulling together, doing what we can for those around us – a phone call here, some shopping there.

Like almost everything else up and down the country, Elmslie House has closed its physical doors for the time being. Classes, workshops, exhibitions and concerts may all have been cancelled or postponed, but we’re still very much up and running in the background. The team are working from home, meetings are happening online and plans are still being made for when Elmslie House can once again open its doors and welcome people in. So until such times, we’d love you to be part of the virtual Elmslie House and Blue Magpie worlds and join us here for news, stories and behind-the-scenes glimpses.

Let’s start by saying “hello” and introducing ourselves…

We are (from left to right): Katie (Marketing and PR), Anna (Founder and Baker-in-Chief), Louise (Events) and Charlotte (Operations).

We were very excited to have Lucie Sheridan and her fabulous Rubbish Portraits booth with us at the last Blue Magpie Contemporary Craft Fair and even more thrilled to have her paint each of us. It was great fun and we loved seeing the finished results!

Stay safe and well, everyone.
Until next time…
