Emaline Delapaix Duo – Friday 7th June, 8.00pm

Emaline Delapaix – vocals, acoustic guitar, keyboard/piano and baby celtic harp (AUS)
Lukas Creswell-Rost – lapsteel, electric guitar and vocals (UK)

Emaline Delapaix is an Australian singer, composer and musician who lives in Berlin Germany with her big orange Canadian cat Reece.

She spends a lot of time writing intense folk pop for piano, acoustic guitar, celtic harp and sometimes whatever else she has lying about the place.

Some say she sounds a little like Kate Bush or Tori Amos, but she also loves a lot of Scandinavian music: music that invokes the weather like storms and warm sunsets.

Emaline’s lyrics explore the human condition and thought provoking topics such as mental health, animal rights, feminism, sexuality as well as love, nature and adventure out on the open road. After a difficult year of illness and depression, in 2010 Emaline decided to quit her day job in Toronto Canada, moving to an isolated fixed caravan in rural Eastern Germany close to the Polish border where she taught herself to play 3 instruments and lived for a year and half before settling in Berlin as a professional musician.

Since that time she has performed over 500 shows all over Germany, Europe, Australia and Canada, creating a dedicated following and becoming well known for her raw and passionate live performances. In Spring 2015, she made her film debut as a silent narrator and composer for the Arte German/French Television documentary ‘Helden der Zukunft’ (Heroes of Tomorrow), an environmental film set in the future looking back on the current crises we are facing today.

During her 2019 Summer tour, Emaline will be showcasing songs from her new mini album ‘With Every Beat’. The CD comes in recycled, handmade packaging, featuring music recorded in Scandinavia and Europe on a grand piano, guitars, synths, mini würlitzer and celtic harp including locations in Berlin, the New Forest England and the mystical Faroe Islands.

Apart from some winter recording at the wonderful Studio Bloch in Tórshavn capturing some Nordic ambience, the record is 100% DIY; a labour of love which was played, recorded and mixed by Emaline and her partner Lukas with a few guest musician friends on cello, trumpet, viola and French Horn.

Drawing on many influences from folktronica, art pop, traditional folk, and even a little soft symphonic metal on the song ‘Turmoil of Winter’, the new record is a sonic soundscape interlacing stories and thoughts about current world issues, dealing with social media addiction, animal rights, the lack of female role models in mainstream music, mental health, and the memory loss and death of a beloved Grand parent with Alzheimers disease.

Although at times melancholy, the music is still positive…the closing track ‘With Every Beat’ is “a kind of mantra to help dissipate negative mental thoughts and body anxiety, instead drawing on the strength we hold in our bodies to fight dark forces and move forward in the world.

“Emaline and Lukas spent the day mesmerising the crowd with musical genius. No one in the audience was immune to such beauty.”
Heidi’s Hangout, Maienfeld Switzerland

“This was an exquisitely subtle performance, both on guitar and keyboard, filled with beautiful melodies and with her lovely voice soaring over the top. There are fleeting similarities with Kate Bush and with Tori Amos but she does have her own very distinctive sound. A big mention too for Lukas Creswell-Rost who accompanied her on electric guitar and lapsteel – a pretty much perfect display of how to enhance a performance but not overwhelm it.”
Stroud Fringe Festival, UK

“No harping around for Emaline at this performance. She wowed the audience with originals and covers.”
Egremont Today, Cumbria UK

“What a wonderful concert. Relaxing, inspiring, fresh as a spring wind.”
Taverne Zum Vollmond, Arlesheim Switzerland

“The concert with Emaline and Lukas was amazing. Emalines voice took us easily with her to think and dream about life, nature and the meaning of love! The audience was under a spell and Lukas supported her outstanding voice with his sensitive guitar playing.”
Atelier 7art, Fehmarn Germany

“The haunting vocals of Delapaix sometimes reminds of Kate Bush.”
